Memorial Medical Center Ducks Interview Request but Offers Statement

As readers may have noticed, I've recently written two columns discussing MMC.  I've sought to discuss MMC with its CEO, John Harris, and give MMC a chance to question stuff or disagree -- and I'd privately asked some follow-up questions..

Tuesday I received an email from MMC Marketing Director Karen Matthews declining any interview but proffering a prepared statement.  I am, of course, posting it here (and the newspaper may or many not print it as an Op/Ed, and I will also send a copy to KRWG for possible posting on its site.

At this time, we are unable to grant you an interview for your upcoming Op/Ed article in the Sun.  However, we have a statement we would like to share.

Memorial Medical Center has been part of the Las Cruces community, caring for residents of Doña Ana County and the surrounding region, since 1950.  The dedication to quality care and community on which our hospital was founded has unwaveringly guided our team for nearly 75 years – and has only been strengthened as Memorial has continued to provide a broader range of specialty services to care for Southern New Mexico.

Our hospital hasn’t been immune to challenges such as staffing shortages that have impacted all hospitals across the United States, but we believe our record speaks for itself, and we are disappointed that Memorial Medical Center’s positive contributions to this region, the hard work of our staff, physicians and medical professionals, and the realities of the market in which we operate are being overlooked to support a false narrative about our facility.

We have worked hard to expand and adapt our services to meet our patients’ needs – from enhancing cancer care and screenings to expanding cardiology and primary care services in just the last year alone – so our residents can receive care closer to home and family.   We are committed to caring for all in this community and have donated more than $30 million in care and service to those in need each year for more than five years.  We participate in and contribute time and resources to numerous local organizations. We also are working very hard to continue to develop and grow our local healthcare workforce and bring new providers to this region.  Our career advancement programs for medical assistants, surgical technicians, nurses, and pharmacists, among others, are helping us to both address workforce shortages and offer new career opportunities to those in our community.

We are fortunate to have a team of more than 1,300 dedicated staff members. Quality and patient safety have always been – and will always be – our first priority, and we are proud of the many notable clinical accreditations and distinctions our team has earned, and how we are making a difference in the lives of neighbors, family members and friends every day.

We have never been prouder to be part of the Las Cruces community. We are committed to ensuring that all people have access to quality care close to home, growing our services and being a great community partner, today and well into the future.
